Blackpink Jisoo, this time on the screen… Acting test bench with ‘exclusive’ [N Focus]

(Seoul = News 1) Reporter Ko Seung-ah = Group Blackpink's Jisoo will make her full-fledged screen debut through the movie 'Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint', which will be released in July. For Jisoo, who has made special appearances in dramas and movies, this work is expected to be an important piece in which she will have to prove her capabilities as an actress.

'Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint', which will be released on July 23rd, is a fantasy action film about a novel that has been serialized for over 10 years, but on the day it ends, the world within the novel becomes reality, and the only reader, 'Kim Dok-ja' (played by Ahn Hyo-seop), must survive in the destroyed world along with the novel's main character, 'Yoo Joong-hyuk' (played by Lee Min-ho) and his colleagues.

'Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint' is considered the best hit among the domestic constellation series. Constellation is a new word created among web novel readers, and refers to a fantasy genre work that includes the setting of a 'constellation'. It is a genre that uses the cliché that a divine or transcendent being, or 'constellation', grants abilities to humans.

Jisoo plays the role of Lee Ji-hye, a high school student who follows Yoo Jung-hyeok and calls him her master. Lee Ji-hye is a powerful fighter who considers Admiral Yi Sun-sin as her constellation, and a cold-blooded character who believes that "each person's survival is the simplest and fairest path."

Director Kim Byung-woo said about the reason for casting Ji-soo, "The casting criteria for this movie were clear, and the first was, 'It's right for a friend who works hard to do it. '" He added, "Ji-soo seemed very enthusiastic when we first met, and she worked very hard both during the pre-reading time and while filming on site." He continued, "In fact, her part is not that big, but I didn't want to lose focus in the movie, so I thought it would be good to have someone who could grab attention, and (Ji-soo) worked very hard in it," and expressed his confidence, saying, "I'm also very satisfied with the result."

As such, Jisoo's role in the film is not very large, but as a key character, she will play an important role in the development of the story. As she needs to increase immersion on screen, it seems that this will be an important turning point in Jisoo's acting career.

'Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint' Jisoo still cut

Jisoo briefly appeared on the screen in the 2023 film 'Dr. Cheon's Exorcist Lab: Secret of the Snow Scene'. Jisoo appeared as a fairy in the play, but it was a special appearance with no lines, and at the time, she attracted attention with her visuals and became a hot topic. Director Kim Sung-sik said, "I thought of Jisoo while looking for an actress who fits the image of a fairy," and explained the casting background, saying, "It was 50% fandom and 50% luck."

The real acting challenge came through dramas. Jisoo, who took on her first leading role in JTBC's 'Snowdrop' in 2021, garnered a lot of attention, but at the same time, she also went through a tough ordeal. Her inaccurate pronunciation and unstable vocalization were put on the chopping block, and she was even criticized for not being able to clearly pronounce her character name, 'Eunyoungro', which left her with regrets.

Coupang Play's 'Newtopia' also received mixed reviews. Since its release in February, there have been various opinions about Jisoo's acting ability. As with the previous work, there were criticisms that the stuffy voice and exaggerated facial expressions disrupted the flow. Of course, since 'Newtopia' is a B-grade zombie comedy, there were also reactions that the exaggerated appearances fit well with the work.

Among them, Jisoo is at an important time to establish herself as an actress, following her screen debut with 'Newtopia' and 'Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint'. She is also scheduled to present the Netflix original series 'Monthly Boyfriend' next year. Unlike the other members of BLACKPINK who are focusing on music activities, Jisoo is showing a differentiated path by putting her efforts into acting as well as singing, so there is a response that this is the time for her to show off her skills in this test.

An entertainment industry insider said, "There have been some regrettable aspects to Jisoo's acting so far, but considering that the drama/movie market has recently been shrinking and it has been difficult to lead to investment and production, there is no denying that Jisoo's name value is having a positive effect on the global market." "However, compared to other struggling rookie actors, Jisoo is receiving many more opportunities in leading and supporting roles, so we hope that her next works, including 'Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint,' will be a chance for her to demonstrate her capabilities as an actress rather than a time for her to grow."
