My first shift began at a university hospital where doctors are busy moving around with many emergency patients and general patients. In particular, there are many emergency patients and many critically ill patients in the thoracic surgery department. Every surgery is a major operation, and I am the only resident in a department that many medical students avoid. Since more than half of the thoracic surgery patients were critically ill and in critical condition, the intensive care unit was full. While I was checking on the patients, a nurse called me urgently and I went over there.

Chest tube insertion is a difficult procedure that can usually be done without the supervision of a professor starting from the second year of residency. However, this is my first time working as a first-year resident, and it is my first time inserting a chest tube on my first emergency patient. Of course, I have seen it on video, but it is not much different from actually doing it. If this procedure is done wrong, it can be a big problem, but since it is urgent, I had no choice but to start filming.

 

It is not a very big or dangerous procedure performed under local anesthesia, but it is a procedure that must be performed under the supervision of a professor. However, Professor Kim Seok-jin was not by my side, and it was an emergency patient, so it was an inevitable choice.

 

* Local anesthesia: An anesthesia method that blocks sensation in a specific part of the body while the patient is conscious, so that they do not feel pain.

 

 

So I had a chest tube inserted, and fortunately, it seemed to have gone well.
