[Sports Chosun Reporter Baek Ji-eun] Singer IU has won a lawsuit for damages against person A, who falsely accused her of plagiarism.
Judge Lee Kun-hee of the 29th Civil Division of the Seoul Central District Court ruled in favor of the plaintiff on the 18th in the damage compensation lawsuit filed by IU against person A, stating, "Mr. A must pay 30 million won to IU."
Last May, Mr. A reported IU to the police, claiming that she had violated copyright law by plagiarizing six songs, including "Pink Shoes," "Good Day," "Bbibbi," "Poor," "Boo," and "Celebrity." Mr. A is not the original creator of these songs, but an ordinary citizen.
Under copyright law, for copyright infringement to occur, one must participate in the creative act, such as composing. However, IU only participated in composing “Celebrity” and producing “Bbibbi,” and did not work on any other songs. In the case of “Celebrity,” where she was the only one involved in composing, the part that Mr. A took issue with and the part that IU participated in were different.
Eventually, the police decided to dismiss the complaint in August of that year.
Accordingly, IU's side filed a lawsuit against person A for damages for defamation, violation of personal rights, and false accusation.
However, as Mr. A continued to remain unresponsive, the court proceeded with the trial through the public notice procedure.
In addition to Mr. A, IU has also taken legal action against malicious commenters who have defamed her, made death threats, invaded her privacy, and spread malicious false information based on groundless plagiarism allegations.
The agency explained, "Among them, there is someone who is presumed to be a middle school classmate of IU. We have determined that he has continued to bully IU even while the related incident is ongoing, and we are responding accordingly."
