“Pay 100 million”… YouTuber who was struck by lightning after defaming Jang Won-young fails to reach agreement in second trial

Jang Won-young ( 20 ), a member of girl group I.B, who is in the middle of a lawsuit for damages, and a YouTuber went through mediation procedures but failed to reach an agreement.

On the 14th , Judge Jeong Seung-won of Civil 102-2, Seoul Central District Court, opened the mediation date for the appeal trial of the damages claim lawsuit filed by Jang Won-young against Mr. A, the operator of the YouTube channel '탈덕수통장'. However, the mediation process ended in about 5 minutes, and the two sides failed to reach an agreement. Accordingly, the two sides will go through a trial and receive a verdict, just like in the first trial.

Person A produced and distributed false videos claiming, "Jang Won-young was jealous, so a fellow trainee's debut was ruined" or "Other celebrities also engaged in prostitution or had plastic surgery." Jang Won-young filed a lawsuit for damages in October of last year, claiming that Person A continued to spread false information and damaged her reputation.

As Mr. A did not respond to the lawsuit, the first trial ruled without a defense procedure that "Mr. A must pay 100 million won to Jang Won-young." Mr. A appealed and appointed a representative in the second trial. On this day, Mr. A was indicted on charges of defamation by uploading a video defaming celebrities including Jang Won-young, and will also face a criminal trial.

The video, in which Mr. A edited and distributed false information about celebrities, garnered a lot of views, and at one point the number of channel subscribers reached 70,000. The prosecution analyzed the YouTube channel account and found that Mr. A earned 250 million won in profit over two years from June 2021. It was also revealed that Mr. A purchased real estate with some of the profits from the YouTube channel.

The prosecution received the cases of three victims, including Jang Won-young, from the police in December of last year and conducted a supplementary investigation, and received additional complaints from five victims last month. They requested an arrest warrant for Mr. A twice, at the end of February and on the 26th of last month, but the court dismissed them, saying, "There is no risk of flight."
