This year's monsoon season is likely to be a localized downpour like last year, with heavy rain falling in a narrow area for a short period of time. An official from the Korea Meteorological Administration said, "The traditional monsoon season is characterized by long-term rainfall over a wide area and predictability based on the movement of the monsoon front," adding, "Some have pointed out that the term 'monsoon season' no longer fits the summer precipitation phenomenon on the Korean Peninsula due to climate change." Lee Myeong-in, director of the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) Heat Wave Research Center, said, "As the global temperature rises, heat waves before the monsoon season are increasing on the Korean Peninsula, and there may be a lot of rain even after the monsoon season in July." He added, "The government also needs to prepare for various types of complex disasters."
