The president of Korea National Oil Corporation revealed that five foreign companies, including ExxonMobil, have contacted him to invest in the East Sea deep-sea gas field project.

Kim Dong-seop, president of Korea National Oil Corporation, which is in charge of the East Sea deep-sea gas field project, said on the 19th, "Even before the business plan is sent out, several major global oil companies are showing interest in participating, so we plan to hold business briefings sequentially."

President Kim made these remarks during a briefing held at the Sejong Government Complex on the same day, and added, “We plan to continue holding business briefings to attract investment from global companies that have deep-sea exploration and development technology, operational expertise, and financial capabilities and that express interest.”

President Kim disclosed for the first time that a global major company participated in the verification, saying, “We evaluated the exploration potential together with an overseas deep-sea evaluation expert agency, and there was verification by a domestic and overseas expert advisory group and additional verification by a global major oil company.”

He explained that he had approached a major oil company in early May and signed a confidentiality agreement, after which he shared some of the data from the exploration of deep-sea gas fields in the East Sea.

He said he could not disclose the company's name due to confidentiality obligations, but that it was "a company that would be known as soon as you mentioned it."

He added, "(The company) highly evaluated the potential of the East Sea gas field, and after internal review, the company expressed interest in participating in the project to the (oil) corporation."

President Kim went on to say that since the official announcement of the development of the East Sea gas field on the 3rd, four other global companies have expressed interest in participating in the project.

The government and the Korea National Oil Corporation previously explained that they derived seven promising structures, including the 'Blue Whale', based on advice from Actgeo, and cross-verified the results through a group of domestic and foreign experts.

The government and the Korea National Oil Corporation believe that since Korea has no experience in developing deep-sea oil and gas resources from a technical perspective, the participation of global major oil companies with abundant development experience and financial resources is necessary.

According to President Kim's explanation, one global major company is currently in the data review stage, while the other four companies are in the initial contact stage.

The government and the oil company plan to first carry out necessary procedures, such as improving related systems and resetting mining areas, before accepting investment from foreign companies.
