TikTok, why was it discontinued in the US?
Chinese video platform TikTok is experiencing a service outage in the United States.

The reason is the 'TikTok ban law' passed last year. The US government enacted this law for national security reasons, believing that ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, could provide personal information of American users to the Chinese government through TikTok.

Under the TikTok ban, ByteDance must sell its TikTok operations in the United States or the service will be banned.

On January 19, 2025, TikTok was removed from the US App Store and Google Play, and its service was discontinued, as the law went into effect.

Service Resumption? President-elect Trump's Words Play a Big Role!

TikTok resumed some of its services just 12 hours after the law went into effect. That's because President-elect Donald Trump announced an executive order extending the TikTok ban for 90 days after taking office.

President-elect Trump said he would “look for solutions rather than ban TikTok outright.”

TikTok also responded, saying, "We appreciate President Trump's support and will work with him to maintain our service and find a long-term solution."

He argued that TikTok needs a 50% stake in the US to be credible, and that TikTok would have difficulty surviving without a sale.

Meanwhile, TikTok's parent company ByteDance remains opposed to the sale. However, AI startup Perplexity has proposed a new structure instead of a sale, proposing a merger with TikTok's US subsidiary.

It remains to be seen whether such a merger would actually happen.

Will the TikTok Ban Spread Globally?
Experts fear that the US ban on TikTok could spread to other countries.

This is because, as in the past cases of Huawei and Kaspersky, America's allies are likely to follow suit. In fact, 'Five Eyes' countries such as Canada, the UK, and Australia have already banned the use of TikTok on government equipment.

If this leads to a global ban , TikTok is likely to lose its position in major markets such as the US, India, and China. This situation is likely to be a major challenge for TikTok.

What does the future hold for TikTok?
TikTok appears to need to sell its business or find a new solution to continue operating in the U.S.

However, with President-elect Trump's executive order buying some time, attention is being paid to what choices TikTok will make.

This situation is not just a problem that will end in the United States, but it has the potential to change the landscape of the global social media market, so we will have to keep an eye on its future developments, right?
