The morning air was surprisingly quiet. In a silence that made it seem like birds would startle and fly out at the sound of the door opening, I was facing the day of my wedding. It was the same scenery, the same sounds, the same people as in my previous life—
Because I was different, everything was different.
“Miss, would you mind if I put your hair up?”
The hand of the maid in charge of my hair stopped. I nodded quietly while looking at myself in the mirror. The hand that was putting the hairpin in moved slowly, and the cold air that brushed the back of my neck flowed down the back of my neck. In my previous life, I cried even at this moment. Not because I was afraid, but because I was sad and wronged. I couldn’t even ask him a word, and I was so sad that I had to bow my head and face death just because I was a bride about to get married.
But I was different in this life. My tears had dried and wouldn't even form. In the first place, I had no reason to cry and no one to cry to.
As I walked onto the porch after putting on my formal attire, the wind brushed my skin. Everyone couldn’t hide their surprised looks as I walked on my own without asking for help from the maids. Feeling their gazes, I quietly calmed my mind. Because their gazes were nothing more than decoration.
“Your Majesty has arrived.”
The call to come was heard. I didn’t catch my breath. The preparations had already been completed yesterday. I nodded and the people familiarly cleared the way. Yoo Ha-min walked across the floor. He was wearing a suit of black and blue, a tightly tied belt, and his eyes were as indifferent as ever. He looked no different from his previous life.
“I stopped by for a moment because I have something to do with my soon-to-be husband and wife.”
His words were polite. However, they were overly formal. As if he had been taught manners by someone. I laughed lightly at his formal words and immediately responded.
“Your Majesty, both then and now, is truly skilled in etiquette.”
Ha Min's eyebrows rose invisibly. Rather than surprise, his eyes looked like they were looking at a puzzle that was out of place. His words, his attitude, his atmosphere. The me of now was not the me of my previous life.
“It seems like your wife has become more free from her worries about what to say since she got sick.”
“When you calm your mind, you realize that you don’t have to choose your words.”
This was neither a provocation nor a game. I just said what I wanted to say. There was no reason to please him any more, nor any intention of doing so. Ha Min took a deep breath and took a few steps closer. It was a distance he had never crossed in his previous life.
“I heard you were feeling unwell the day before, but you’re walking and talking so well this morning… It’s amazing.”
“…I guess that illness is a disease that comes from the heart.”
“Is that what you wanted to say to me?”
I looked at him for a long time and then tilted my head very slightly.
“Perhaps this is something that this person from the past would not have dared say.”
His eyes stopped. Something inside them felt distorted. A sense of alienation, unfamiliarity, confusion. And a very shallow boundary.
“It’s changed. A lot.”
“Are you saying that this person is more annoying than before?”
He didn't answer. Silence filled the space between us for a long time. Only at the end of it, very low and slow, did he open his mouth.
“…I don’t know.”
I didn't laugh. I just nodded quietly. That one word was enough. The fact that this person didn't understand me at all. And I already knew how that fact would shake up this relationship.

After the ceremony, people dispersed to their seats. He stayed to watch me until the end. He didn't say anything, but it was a clearer signal than words. Now he was curious about me. He felt unfamiliar. The first hurdle that I had not reached in my previous life. I opened the door.
And then, very quietly, he began to prepare to break down his inner self.
-
The first night was particularly quiet.
In the darkened wedding hall, the moonlight streaming through the window was long and stretched along the floor. The space, which accepted the darkness without a single light, was strangely quiet, and I sat there quietly, holding my breath. This night, which I had not been able to reach in my previous life. Everything resembled that time—but now I was alive. As if I had never touched death.
There was a sound through the crack in the door. Steady footsteps, the doorknob being touched carefully. Even the sound of the door opening was quiet.
“Can I come in?”
The voice from outside the door was low and neat. I didn’t answer, but just looked toward the door. Ha-min soon appeared. He had changed into a long suit and looked neater and looser than usual. Ha-min stood at the threshold and took a step back and looked at me. He remained silent until I spoke first. As if it was polite to keep my distance.
"Did you experience any inconvenience?"
It was a formal greeting. I shook my head slightly.
“I wasn’t relaxed enough to feel uncomfortable.”
He kept his gaze on me. The dark moonlight in his eyes created a strange atmosphere. Without taking my gaze off him, I slowly opened my mouth.
"I wonder if it would be proper for me to ask your Majesty why you have come here tonight?"
His eyes wavered for a moment at my words. Rather than surprise, it was a reaction that indicated my tone of speech was out of the norm. Soon, he continued speaking quietly.
"It's our first night. It's nice to spend the night together."
He took a few more steps into the room. His footsteps were firm and cautious. I sat there, meeting his gaze.
"Then, has your Majesty come today to observe the ceremony?"
"I guess that's okay too."
"This person would rather have a comfortable night than a formal one."
His steps stopped. Soft words spread quietly in the darkness. This time, he did not respond right away. Then, after taking a very short breath, he spoke.
"When I see you again, you've changed a lot."
"I'm sure this change won't be very welcome, Your Majesty."
He lowered his gaze for a moment. It was a rare moment of emotion in his expressionless face. I quietly got up from my seat. I walked closer to the floor and said.
"Since you said you came tonight for an example, I will also keep the example. It would be good to share a room so that we can both rest comfortably."
As I walked to the door, I felt his movement. He approached me without a sound and quietly placed his hand on the back of my hand.
"The example I was hoping for wasn't like that."
His hand was warm, but I didn't want to easily accept that warmth. I watched him quietly, without stepping back or pushing him away. A long silence. In that moment, memories of my past life and my current emotions intertwined. He took his hand away, and I turned my gaze outside the door.
"Rest in peace, Your Majesty."
He nodded without replying. His back disappeared as he quietly turned away, and silence flowed again in the room. This time, even the silence was my choice. I stood in front of the door for a moment. And then, very slowly, I turned inside.
This night will pass. In the time I never got to experience in my previous life, I was quietly preparing for the next.
