It was quieter here than I thought.
The sign at the entrance to the village had an old-fashioned look, and the bus left behind a dusty trail as it passed the stop.
A few months ago, I wouldn't have come here looking for a place like this, but these days, I'm running away to a place like this. The door opened without me even ringing the bell, but it announced its presence with an old bell, and for a moment, I hesitated, thinking I had made a mistake, but then stopped when I heard a cat meowing.
Inside, the air flowed quieter than the sound of a cat.
One person, and three cats. The yellow cheese cat sitting on the window sill just blinked, and a cat passing by brushed its tail against its ankle, letting out a small breath. Someone got up from the corner table, and he slowly approached and spoke.
“If you’re going to sit, avoid the window seat on the right side. Dori hates it.”
His voice was lower than I expected. It was dry, but somehow it didn’t feel bad. I hesitated and carefully put my bag down on another table. I thought he might say something more, but he returned to the counter without saying anything.
The space where cats tread cautiously was a temperature that made people feel bad even breathing too loudly. I sat down and tried to look at the menu, but instead of a booklet, there was only a black chalkboard.
'Coffee, tea, milk. No syrup. No packaging.'
There was nothing special about it, but I laughed. This one line, written as if it was strict and annoying, was surprisingly honest. I looked at the man behind the counter again. His pale double eyelids, his slightly raised eyes like a cat's, his hands moving without saying a word. He had a sharp impression, but he looked strangely gentle around the cats.
“Coffee.”
I ordered quietly.
He nodded and turned away without saying a word.
After a while, the coffee was placed in front of me. It wasn’t a small paper cup, nor was it a ceramic cup with a cafe logo. It was just black coffee, nothing special, but it was strangely warm. It wasn’t the taste, but the warmth I felt from the brief glances when he handed me the cup.
He left again without saying a word, and I took a sip of my coffee and sighed in relief. It was quiet here, and no one asked me questions. That was something I was grateful for at the moment.
A cat flopped down next to my shoe. Its tail swished lazily, and its front paw absentmindedly rubbed its face. I slowly reached out, but the cat only blinked and didn't move. It seemed like the way to do things here was to just leave it as it was.
He came back again and quietly put something down next to the table.
Two sheets of white tissue, and a small package of yuzu tea bags.
“You look like you have a cold. Bring your own water.”
For a word spoken with a blank expression, it was strangely warm.
I nodded, a little embarrassed, and watched him turn around, thinking again.
His words were short, but his actions were long. He poured warm water into a cup, brewed yuzu tea, and looked out the window.
I thought it would be nice if it rained. If it rained, I thought this silence would be a little more forgivable.
That day, for the first time, I felt that there was someone who could comfort me without having to say much.
I still don't know that person's name, but
The coffee I had that day definitely made my day a little less bitter.
